The view the building was designed for

Buildings are designed as objects in a place, and most photography of them only ever shows the object. From the ground you get elevations; you do not get the relationship between the building and the site, the approach, the landscaping or the town it sits in.

Height gives you that in one frame — which is why the aerial shot is so often the one that ends up on the cover, in the awards submission and at the top of the sales particulars.

It is photography rather than data capture, and the difference is in the planning. Time of day, direction of light, and the one angle where the building has some shape to it instead of looking flat.

The aerial shot is usually the one that ends up on the cover, in the awards submission and at the top of the particulars — because it is the only view that shows the building, its setting and how the two work together in a single frame.

Getting it from a platform or a helicopter is an expensive day. Getting it from a drone is an hour, planned around the light.

Planned Around The Light, Not The Diary

Buildings photograph well early and late, when the light is at an angle and the elevations have some modelling in them. At midday under flat cloud, the same building looks like a drawing of itself.

So we plan for the conditions rather than the first free slot, and we will move a date rather than deliver something grey. For a building you will be marketing for years, one more week is not the expensive part.

Everything comes back edited and graded, in web and print resolution, with a full licence for your own use.

Questions

When is the best time to shoot?

Usually early or late in the day, when the light is at an angle and the building has some shape to it. We will suggest a window for your particular building and aspect.

Can you shoot video as well as stills?

Yes, and most jobs want both. Tell us where the video is going and how long it should be, and we will shoot and cut for that.

Can we use the images however we like?

You get a full licence for your own use — website, brochures, submissions, social media — without a further fee. We ask for a credit where it is practical, but it is not a condition.

What happens if the weather is wrong on the day?

We move it. Wind and rain make for unsafe flying and soft, unusable pictures, and a survey you cannot rely on is worse than no survey. We watch the forecast and give you as much notice as we can.

Is it legal to fly over my property?

Yes, within the rules. We hold a CAA Operational Authorisation and every flight is planned against the airspace, the surroundings and the people on and around the site before we attend. If a site needs a permission we cannot get, we tell you at enquiry rather than on the day.
